T Reilly Geopolitical

The world has become increasingly complex since 20 January. Old and apparently immutable alliances are coming questioned as never before. The Post-War unity of the Trans-Atlantic alliance is under more pressure than it has ever borne. Apparent enemies are treated as friends; countries vote together in UN votes in ways that were inconceivable mere months ago; and unshakeable support for beleaguered countries invaded by their neighbours has suddenly become deeply uncertain.
And as if the geopolitics were not complicated enough, in the background, the threat of climate change grows ever-larger – aggravated by policies which appear to signal a retreat from the global determination to tackle it. Governments retreat from ESG and DEI. China’s rise continues. Enforcement is weakened. The rule of international law is challenged. Global migration feeds the hard-right political narrative and the rise of AI fans the flames of disinformation.
