Thomas Reilly is a former senior UK diplomat, serving as Ambassador to Morocco and Mauritania as well as the Deputy Ambassador to Egypt. As Head of Government Relations for Shell UK Ltd he was a Senior Advisor to the Board and CEO. He works with FTSE100 companies giving their Boards strategic advice on issues ranging from new market entry in Africa; compliance with evolving EU ESG legislation; to solving intractable problems between companies and governments in the Middle East and North Africa.
Thomas has an extensive network of senior private sector contacts as well as in the UK, Middle East and North African Governments, the institutions of the EU and with the major UK think-tanks.
Thomas has particular expertise in the mining and extractives sectors, which are perhaps the two sectors most acutely impacted by climate change and the urgency of providing the essential raw materials for a successful energy transition.
During his time as Ambassador and Senior Advisor to Covington, Thomas has written a number of blogs on these and other important geopolitical issues at Global Policy Watch and on the FCO Website.
Thomas is a senior advisor to the Vice Chancellor of Coventry University, as well as a Governor of the British School in Marrakesh and a Trustee for a girls’ educational charity helping girls from some of the poorest Atlas communities continue in education to the age of 18. He works with a number of other charities in the UK, including Speakers for Schools and has close links to the women’s empowerment charity Inspiring Girls International.
Thomas now lives in France. He stood as a candidate in the European Parliament elections and is the President of the pro-EU political Association for Renew in Alpes de Haute Provence. Every one of these factors presents risks and challenges for companies attempting to trade across borders against an increasingly uncertain and unpredictable backdrop. But companies which receive excellent geopolitical advice can set their strategies to not only survive these uncertain times, but prosper in them.
Offering that advice to companies requires a deep understanding and extensive experience of international relations and European political and regulatory affairs and a profound understanding of the political and economic forces driving them.
At T Reilly Geopolitical, we draw on more than 25 years international experience of working at senior diplomatic and commercial levels with Government Ministers and Boards of FTSE100, to be able to offer that advice to companies to enable them to plot their course to success through the increasing geopolitical and geostrategic uncertainties of the modern world.
